Project “Stop the Masquerade”
Historical Background of Ditmas Park
  • 1908: Ditmas Park Association was established.
  • The Ditmas Park District is made up of 2,000 to 2,500 largely residential buildings built between 1902 and 1914.
  • In the 1970s and 1980s, the block between Ditmas Avenue and Dorchester Road on Ocean Avenue was known as “Doctors’ Row” due to its growing affluence.
  • 1983: Ditmas Park was inducted into National Registry of Historic Places.
  • The residents of Ditmas Park East are vigorously pursuing the distinctive “Landmark Status” that currently benefits Ditmas Park West residents.
  • Ditmas Park itself is still comprised of a culturally diverse community of professional and working-class families. It remains an area of architectural wonder as the type and sheer number of residences are unlike any others found in Brooklyn or elsewhere in the United States.
Stop the development of a medical facility disguised as a school
  • Since 2009, outside developers have been attempting to commercialize the neighborhood by planning to construct a pediatric nursing home facility “masquerading” as a school.
  • The affected lots are located at 925 and 919 Ocean Avenue. These lots are residentially zoned for single family homes ONLY.
  • After years of neglect, one lot (925 Ocean Avenue) is not only an eye sore (poorly maintained) but also poses a potential public health hazard (i.e., rodents).
  • Ditmas Park residents are strongly opposed to this project because of the potentially negative impact it will have on their quality of life, their home values, and the character of the historic neighborhood.
  • Consequently, the BkCAC is currently pursuing litigation in order to protect the community from the invasion of commercial developers.
Statement of Purpose
  • BkCAC is committed to sustaining of the distinctive character of Ditmas Park and similar neighborhoods throughout Brooklyn.
  • Together we can work to preserve the unique residential character of our communities.
